Eclipse 2017

On Monday August 21, 2017, while American’s all over the country looked to the sky to observe the solar eclipse, the Suomi NPP satellite was looking down on Earth and captured beautiful imagery of the moon’s shadow from its low-Earth orbit.

Throughout the day, 14 states across the county experienced the path of totality and more than two minutes of darkness mid-day. The partial eclipse was viewable across North America and this image was captured at 2:30pm Eastern by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument on board the NOAA/NASA Suomi NPP satellite.
